Vanguard

Armored titans standing as the unyielding gatekeepers of the Spire's lower depths.

The Vanguard is not a single entity but a formidable class of elite guardians serving the Spire's ancient order. Standing as the primary antagonists in the Ironclad's journey, these armored titans represent the pinnacle of martial discipline and magical fortification within the tower's lower levels. They are the gatekeepers that test the resolve of any climber who dares to challenge the structure's defenses, often appearing as the final obstacle before a major floor transition.

Lore & Background

Unlike the chaotic monsters found in the wilds outside, the Vanguard operates with a rigid, almost mathematical precision. Their movements are choreographed to maximize damage output while minimizing exposure, making them a tactical nightmare for unprepared adventurers. Legends say that the armor they wear is cursed to never leave its wearer's back until the wearer falls, binding soul and steel in an eternal pact of service.

In Their Own Story

The heavy thud of boots echoed against the stone floor as the Vanguard stepped forward, its massive shield gleaming under the torchlight. The climber raised their weapon, heart pounding against ribs, knowing that one mistake meant death. With a roar that shook the dust from the ceiling, the guardian charged, a wall of iron and magic closing in. There was no retreat, only the clash of steel against steel.

Reader's Guide

The Ironclad faces the Vanguard as their first major boss encounter on Floor 5. This fight introduces players to the concept of high block values and shield mechanics. The Vanguard relies heavily on generating massive amounts of Block each turn, forcing players to deal with a 'tank' that can absorb significant punishment before taking damage.

The boss utilizes attacks like 'Shield Bash' which deals damage equal to the amount of Block it has generated, creating a dangerous cycle if not managed. It also uses 'Charge' to move forward and strike, often accompanied by 'Defend' actions that stack its protection. Players must utilize Strength-scaling cards or specific removal effects to break through its defenses.

Upon defeat, the Vanguard drops a unique relic, typically offering a powerful passive effect related to Block generation or damage mitigation, rewarding players who successfully navigate its defensive strategies.
