Burn Damage
A persistent inferno that consumes foes turn after turn.
Burn Damage is a persistent status effect within the Slay the Spire universe that inflicts damage over time upon affected entities. Unlike immediate attacks, Burn lingers on a target, triggering automatically at specific intervals to whittle down health reserves without requiring further player input each turn. It is thematically tied to fire-based combatants and represents the lingering heat of battle.

Lore & Background
Ancient texts within the Spire speak of warriors who could ignite their weapons with such intensity that the flames continued to rage even after the strike was delivered. This magic is dangerous and volatile, requiring precise control lest the user succumb to their own heat. Those who master this art understand that patience is as important as power; a single spark can become an inferno given enough time.
In Their Own Story
The Ironclad stood amidst the rubble of the second floor, his heavy blade dripping with embers. The slimes before him had already been struck, their gelatinous bodies glowing with an unnatural orange hue. As he raised his shield for defense, one of the creatures twitched at the start of its turn, a flash of fire consuming it from within. It did not scream; the heat was silent and absolute.
Reader's Guide
Burn damage operates as a persistent debuff that triggers at the start of each affected unit's turn. Unlike Poison, which strikes later, Burn immediately reduces health as soon as the victim begins their actions. Crucially, this damage bypasses any Block currently held by the target, making it essential for breaking through defensive enemies early in combat.
Synergy is vital for this strategy. Cards that apply Vulnerability do not increase Burn damage directly, but they amplify other attacks used alongside it. Focus on relics or cards that generate extra energy to play more burn-inflicting skills without skipping turns. Remember that Purge effects from allies or enemies will strip away your accumulated stacks instantly, so timing is crucial when facing healing foes.
Advanced runs require managing the decay of block against incoming fire damage if you are targeted. If you are the target, prioritize removing Burn quickly using cleanse items to prevent attrition. For offensive builds, ensure your burn value scales with other stats where possible, such as strength-based multipliers on certain skills, ensuring every stack counts toward victory without wasting resources.
