Relic Slots

Three sacred slots hold the key to scaling your power against the Spire's endless horrors.

Relic Slots are the fundamental structural framework of a Slay the Spire run, representing the three distinct opportunities an Ascendant has to acquire powerful passive artifacts during their journey up the tower. Unlike cards or potions, these slots do not fill automatically; they are earned by defeating specific enemies, bosses, or finding them in shops and events, serving as the primary engine for scaling power beyond basic card synergies.

Lore & Background

The limit of three slots is not an arbitrary rule but a reflection of the Ascendant's capacity to channel such potent forces. Too many conflicting magics would overwhelm the soul, causing the traveler to lose their mind before reaching the top. Thus, the choice of which Relic to keep becomes as critical as the cards drawn; it defines the strategy, forcing the player to commit to a specific path of power, be it overwhelming offense, unyielding defense, or chaotic manipulation.

In Their Own Story

The Ascendant stood before the glowing pedestal in the Act Two boss chamber, the air thick with ozone and ancient dust. In their hand, they held a choice: a heavy iron key that promised infinite draw, or a fragile glass orb that doubled damage but shattered health. With three slots already filled by a rusted coin and a strange mask, this fourth artifact would force them to discard one of their previous treasures. They closed their eyes, feeling the hum of the Spire's magic, and knew that the path forward depended on which memory they were willing to sacrifice.

Reader's Guide

Optimizing Relic Slots requires understanding how passive effects compound over time. Early game, prioritize Relics that solve immediate problems, such as generating extra energy for heavy card costs or providing block against aggressive early enemies. As the run progresses, focus on synergies; a Relic that generates Block pairs perfectly with characters who have high damage output, while Energy generation is vital for decks reliant on multi-card combos.

Do not fear 'bad' Relics if they enable a specific strategy, but be wary of those that introduce randomness or self-damage unless you have the tools to mitigate them. The third slot is often where runs are won or lost; use it to cap off your deck's theme. For high Ascension levels, efficiency is key: avoid Relics that waste time in combat or offer diminishing returns compared to raw card quality.
